Sunday the 17th July saw the creme de la creme of MTBers head to Bellurgan Park to battle for the National Champions Jersey. Ben Wilson was taking part in the U14’s, Adi Booth, Richard Cowan & Brian Wilson were in the M40 race, Peter Davison was in the juniors, Robert Davison was in the M50’s, Davy Broome, Graham Smyth and the ever young Barry Kellett were flying the flag in the elite section.
The host club Cuchulainn Cycling Club put a fabulous course and even managed to sort the sunshine out. This made the course dry and fast so all that training in the wet seemed like it wasn’t going to be much use. The Under 14’s saw Ben Wilson having proved he has plenty of climbing power after Thursday nights hill climb produced a superb performance to take 3rd place in a very tight race.
The rest of team DCC did OK as well. Nationals newbies, Davy Broome and Richard Cowan both got all the laps in, with Davy excelling in the elite race and Richard in the hugely competitive M40.
Good showings from all the other guys, especially Graham Smyth who launched off the drop that had gave him mental anguish for a week, three times during the race, having never managed to make his mind let go and do it in practice! The Davisons had a nationals to forget with mechanicals and tired legs that stopped either reaching a podium – no doubt both will be back on the podium soon. Barry Kellett had a great performance in a very talented field of Elites and managed to take a brilliant 6th place.
Many thanks to Team Dromara CC who pitched in with top advice like “Go hard at the start and try and stay in front”, Peter Davison proved he is ready for a full time support role with his professional bottle hand outs. It turned out to be a great day out for all with plenty of sun cream used. Next up will be the Last round of the Club League followed by the Club Championship Race.
